Alert: CSX Transportation Technology Outage

CSX Transportation is currently dealing with a significant technology systems outage that began on October 27, 2026, impacting railroad operations across its network.

CSX has confirmed that the outage is not the result of a cyberattack and no data breach has been identified by the company’s security team. Systems are being restored on a rolling basis, but not all operational functions have been fully recovered. Critical train control systems, including dispatching and Positive Train Control (TC), have remained operational throughout the incident.

The outage has affected many of the systems that support day-to-day railroad operations, including:

  • Crew calling and crew management systems
  • Work order processing
  • Train bulletin distribution
  • Yard inventory management
  • Data interchange with connecting railroads

As a result, train crew assignments are being handled manually, slowing the network. Some trains were unable to operate because required paperwork could not be generated electronically.

  • For shippers and logistics providers, the biggest intermodal and freight implications are:
  • Delays in rail car movement and interchange transfers.
  • Potential congestion at major terminals as backlogs build.
  • Slower status visibility and customer updates from CSX systems.
  • Possible drayage and inland transportation delays tied to CSX-served ramps.
  • Rail transit delays on containers moving inland from East Coast ports.
  • Potential dwell increases at Chicago rail hubs.
  • Delayed interchange moves between CSX and carriers such as Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, BNSF, and other Class I partners.

CSX has not provided a full recovery ETA, but systems are reportedly returning online gradually.
